Failed RPZ valve replaced
We replaced a failed RPZ valve at a Moggill community centre, and found the water pressure was 850 kPa, well above the 500 kPa maximum.
- Service
- Replacement lead-free 15mm RPZ valve
- Location
- Community centre, Moggill QLD 4070
- Issue
- Failed RPZ valve
- Finding
- Water pressure of 850 kPa, against a 500 kPa maximum
Replacement RPZ valve assembly, Moggill community centre.A failed RPZ valve and pressure well over the limit
An RPZ (reduced pressure zone) valve protects the water supply from backflow. This one had failed at a community centre in Moggill. While we were on site, we measured the water pressure.
- The issue. A failed RPZ valve.
- What we found. Water pressure of 850 kPa, well above the proposed 500 kPa maximum for the building’s general supply.
- New valve installed. A replacement lead-free 15mm RPZ valve, adjacent to the equipment it protects.
- Recommendation made. A pressure reducing valve to limit downstream static pressure to 500 kPa.
Four steps from failed valve to a fix
What we measured, replaced and recommended.
Measure the pressure
During the works, the water pressure was measured at 850 kPa.
Compare to the limit
That is well above the proposed 500 kPa maximum for the building’s general water supply, and could have contributed to the RPZ valve failing.
Replace the RPZ valve
A replacement lead-free 15mm RPZ valve was supplied and installed, connected to the existing pipework for zone protection of the equipment.
Recommend a PRV
We recommended a suitably sized pressure reducing valve on the supply, set to limit downstream static pressure to 500 kPa.
Protecting the new valve from high pressure
At 850 kPa, the supply was running well above the proposed 500 kPa maximum, which could have contributed to the failure. We recommended a suitably sized pressure reducing valve (PRV) on the community centre’s water supply, set to limit downstream static pressure to a maximum of 500 kPa.
